Learning Methods
There are three types of learning modalities: face to face, online and hybrid learning.
Perhaps the most common learning modality is face to face. Most of my classmates prefer face to face learning. This learning method has a lot of advantages. For instance, you can ask questions when you come to class. Sometimes you can discuss the lecture and share your ideas with your teacher and classmates. When you discuss a lecture with your classmates or teacher you can see the other side of your lecture. In doing so, you will learn a lot of information and different way of thinking. On the other hand, you have to follow your schedule. That means you cannot choose your free time when you want it. This learning method is also expensive because when you go to school or course you have to pay money.
Another type of learning modality is online. This learning modality has started to become known by everyone. When you choose online learning, you can manage your time. That means you can make plan and that time you can study online. When you watch a video and you do not understand, don’t worry because you can watch it a lot of times, but when you watch a video, you cannot ask a question, and when you watch video a lot of times, you will spend too much time. These are disadvantages of online learning. According to my classmate Tasnia, if you have questions, you can write them down and send an email to your instructor. That’s the way to mediate that disadvantage of online learning.
Finally, there is hybrid learning. Actually, most students use that learning modalities but they do not realize it. Because you face to face after and those students usually search the internet and they learn a lot of information. That learning method combines face to face and online learning methods. You can go to school, listen to your instructor and search the internet by yourself.
In conclusion, everybody choose different kind of learning methods because people have different character, but I prefer face to face learning method. I can learn a lot of information during the class time.

VOLUNTEERISM
Most of people have same lives. Every day, they wake up early to go to working. After they work, they will pick their son or daughter up or study. They say that they don’t have enough time to be a volunteer. But that’s not a reason. There are several reasons to be a volunteer.
One common reason is you can meet new people. When you are a volunteer, you will go to a lot of meeting. In doing so you can talk people and you can be friends with them. It will make you a social person. There is an easy thing to get rid of your monotone life. On the other hand when you are a volunteer, probably you will be tired because should allow time for meeting. For instance, I don’t have time to be a volunteer. If I was a volunteer, I had to quit working or studying English.
Another common reason is you can help people who need your help and be part of the community. You can share your ideas with people, and you can teach groups of people.
According to my classmate Olga who is a volunteer ‘mira.usa.org’, helping people who need food and information about immigration is beneficial. After I had talked with her, I thought she was exactly right because I am an immigrant too, and I need a lot of information about us government, immigration and so on. Also I can get information free. Actually this reason is advantage for me but if you are a volunteer this is a disadvantage of volunteerism that you cannot earn money. That’s why when we ask a question, it will be free.
In addition, you can gain experience to include on your resume and transfer application. Okay, you don’t earn money when you are a volunteer, and you will be tired, but you will gain experience. You will learn different culture, variety information to use you’re your own life. Also, you can reorganize you resume. That means you can get a lot of opportunities.
In conclusion, if you decided to be a volunteer, you can find a lot of reasons. Now, go to internet, search it and find which one is your interest and to be a volunteer.

‘Miss Evers’ Boys’
What would you think if you heard the US government had supported secret medical experimentation for over 40 years? This is what happened in Tuskegee, Alabama. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case.
Miss Evers Boys is a nonfiction movie. It’s a drama. It’s a historical nonfiction movie. Its set in 1932 in the U.S. Alfre Woodard and Laurence Fishburne are starring in it. It’s about Tuskegee experiment, a U.S. Federal Government Medical experiment on poor African American men. They studied the effects of untreated syphilis. Dr. Brodus and Dr. Douglas help African American men for treatment in Alabama, but it was faked long term treatment. The nurse Miss Evers was the main character in the movie. The nurse was going around telling everyone that the government is looking for their treatment for free. She said that free test and tree hot lunches. In the beginning, she did not have any idea about the experiment. When she understood what was happening, it was too late. She felt confused, and she was in an extremely hard situation because her boyfriend was there and he already took a shot. Fist, Willie Johsan, Bryan Hodman, and ‘Big’ Ben Washington agreed for treatment. Finally, they injected 412 men and promised them free medical treatment. The patients received fake long term treatment. By the end of the movie many African American men passed away because of the experiment.
Tuskegee study is connected to many studies. Although I have never personal experiment, I am reading a book that name is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks now. The book is about doctors experiments. The doctor of the book took Henrietta Lacks’ cells without asking, and her family would learn that after years. Her cells are omnipresent. They never died, and they were exponential. Many doctors in the book also injected HeLa cells into patients without their knowledge. There are experiments like the Tuskegee experiment.
When I watched the movie, I felt angry, and upset. It made me very worried, because they were human. They were not animal. They died because of the experiments. Experiment on human is not ethic. I am disappointed because we should trust all doctors. Now, how can I trust them when I go to a hospital?

Social Networking Sites Good or Bad?
How often do you use social networking? What do you think are social networking sites good for our society? You cannot say that I do not know what Facebook, Twitter, Instgram are. We all know, everybody use social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat. Nowadays, all people have their own laptop and smart phone. That makes us easy to accessible to social networking sites. In other words there are a lot of advantages of using social networking sites. There are a lot of reasons that social networking sites are good.
First of all, social networking sites spread information faster than any other media. Think about yourself, when you wake up in the morning time, you first prefer to check your social media. We check all our social media a lot of times during the day. You write about your idea on your social media. I mean Social networking sites are our part of our lives. Researchers show, over 50% of people learn about breaking news on social media. 65% of traditional media reports and editors use sites like Facebook and LinkedIn for story research, and % 52 use twitters. I have a really good experiment about using social networking sites. When I was in Turkey, Turkish government wanted to build a new shopping center in a green area about 3 years ago. Many of Turkish citizens did not agree to destroy the green area by government, and they used twitter and Facebook for meeting. Lots of people got information about the shopping center from social networking sites, and they prevent to build a new shopping center. Now, the area is still green.
Second, social networking sites help students do better at school.59% of students with access to the internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss educational topics. 50% use these sites to talk about school assignments. We all want our children are the best in schools, so we should show them how they can use the social networking sites the best way to get information about educational topic.
Finally, social networking sites allow people to improve their relationships and make new friends. %70 of adults social networking users visit the sites to connect with friends and family, and increase online communication strengthens relationships. 69% report getting to know students of their school better and %57 make new friends.
The opponents of social media can harm job stability and employment prospects. However, social media sites help employers find employees and job-seekers find work. For example, there are a lot sites that help to people find a new job such as ‘JubHub’ or ‘craigslist’. These social networking sites can help employments and employees.
There are a lot of good reasons to think that social networking sites are good. Everybody uses the social networking sites, and they have a lot of good reasons. Using social networking sites is not harmful for us.

Good Schools can Make Low- Income Teenagers Healthier
A study shows us good schools can make low-income teens healthier. According to the passage, there are two kinds of schools: high performing schools and lower performing schools. The author compared behaviors between students in high performing schools and students in lower performing schools. The author wrote if you attended schools. Which were high performing schools, engaged in at least one of … very risky behaviors like having unsafe sex. On the other hand, the author wrote 42% of students (teens) who attended lower performing schools took part in the unsafe behaviors. The author Dr. Michael Wong said, ‘better education will lead to better health.’ Most health researchers said the study was important.
There is one idea that I think is significant. On paragraph 4, the author wrote, ‘better education will lead to better health.’ This is an important sentence. I think this sentence summarizes the passage. I also agree with this sentence. There are a lot of reasons that we can agree with the author’s opinion which one ‘better education will lead to better health.’ High performing schools give better education.
First of all, high performing schools have high technology. All students who attend high performing schools can understand lectures better thank the other students because the high technology schools have a lot of opportunities to teach very well. Students can make experiments. For example, I attended a lecture in Qcc there weeks ago. The speaker came from the hospital. The lecture was about ‘birth control’. She explained us birth control, vaccine, health sex etc. Qcc has opportunity that invited the doctor to present. Qcc has technology to make a PowerPoint present etc. All of us students could understand birth control because the doctor explained us. She gave us a lot of examples that she experiment from her patients. In addition, high performing schools has health center. We can get more information about problems that we have.
Second, there is a discipline-control student in high performing schools. Teachers know all students that she\he has, and the teacher can interest in them. Discipline is more than lower-performing schools. Students only focus on their education. Teachers control them. Knowledge about can read many books that make them knowledge about most things. Maybe you can go to hospital in the beginning if you sacrifice that something is wrong in your body.
Better education makes our lives relaxed and comfortable. If you have good education you can find a job easily, and you can find well-paying job. That means you won’t have stress. If you don’t have stress you will live longer than others. On the other hand, if you dint have better education you cannot find good job. You will always thing about your future. It will cause more stress, and it will make your body tired. For example, I have two close friends. One went to the best high school in my country. Now, she works in a good company, but my other friend went to lower performing school. He started smoking and drinking because of his friends. Now, he is still trying to find a better job. He stressed too much and he went to doctor because of stress.
In conclusion, there are a lot of reason these show us better education makes us healthier. Good schools give better education.

Informed Consent was Invalid
I read a book that name is ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’ by Rebecca Skloot. It is a nonfiction book. Henrietta Lacks is the main character in the book. Dr. Gey and Dr. Telinde who was doctor of the John Hopkins took her cells without asking. Those cells never died. In other word, they are immortal and omnipresent. When she had in a pain in her cervix, she decided to go to hospital, and she learned she had a cancer which was cervical cancer. John Hopkins was hospital name where she got treatment for her cancer gave her a form with the word ‘operation permit’, and she signed it. After that doctors took samples from her cervix, but no one had told her that doctor who name was Telinde was collecting samples or asked if she wanted to be a donor. Based on the form that she signed before the treatment, do you believe doctors had to right to obtain a sample from her cervix to use in their research? What information would they have had to give her fir Henrietta to give informed consent? Do you think Henrietta would have given explicit consent to have a tissue sample used in medical research if she had been given all the information? What about you? Do you always thoroughly read consent forms before signing them? Informed consent is a process for getting permission. There are a lot of reasons why Henrietta’s informed consent was invalid. Let me explain you clearly why I think it was invalid.
First of all, she was uneducated person. Henrietta lived with her grandfather, tommy Lacks in Clover, Virginia. She growth there with her cousins. She did not go to high school, university etc. She was born in a poor in an area. On page 16 author Skloot wrote, ‘…. Walking into Hopkins was like entering a foreign country where she did not speak the language. What Skloot means is that she was born in US, and English was her first language. When she went to the hospital, she felt weird like she was foreign. She had never studied biology, science or the other. She did not understand what words mean that doctor used. I think this is important because she signed the formed, but she did not understand. Even if her first language was English, she did not understand. In other word, she signed the form, but she had no idea. Maybe she did not read it, or she read, but she did have it. I can say maybe she first saw informed consent that she signed in her life. I also can say the informed consent was invalid.
Second, the informed consent was too general. It was for everyone who came to John Hopkins that time. For example, if I lived that time, and I went to John Hopkins for a treatment, they would tell me to sign that same form. They would not explain what it was the next stop etc. It was not include specific information or deep information about her treatment. Doctor Gey and Telinde did not give her information about her cancer and her treatment. I mean they did not write anything about we will take a sample from your cervix. It makes the informed consent invalid.
Finally, doctors did not ask her permission. Dr. Gey and Dr. Telinde did not talk with her about taking a simple from her cervix. They never talked with her face to face. Before taking a sample, Henrietta did not have idea. Doctors did not ask her that could we take a sample from your cervix to using experiments. No one told her Telinde was collecting samples, or asked her if she wanted to be a donor. We cannot say that she signed the form, so she wanted to a donor. The patient was unknowing.
In my opinion, based in the form that she signed before the treatment, I don’t believe doctors had to right to obtain a sample from her cervix to use in their research. I mean it was general, and she was uneducated, no one explain her it face to face. I can also say doctors did not ask her if she wanted to be a donor. They took her calls without asking. I think they have had to tell Henrietta about her treatment, and they should explain her that what was happening. They have to get her permission before taking her cells. She did not know anything about biology, but they had to explain her clearly. Her cells have helped some of the most important advances in medicine such as the polio vaccine, cloning, chemotherapy. I think she would have given explicit consent to have a tissue sample used in medical research if she had ban given all the information. To be honest even I don’t always thoroughly read consent forms before signing them. Sometimes it is too long, and I bored when I read it. Then I just sign.
In conclusion, Henrietta was uneducated, the informed consent was too general and doctors did not ask her permission. Those are some reasons why I think the informed consent was not valid.

Level Playing Field
The perspective 3 “some groups do have particular disadvantages. For this reason, society owes them extra assistance in order to help them achieve equality. On the other hand, there are other protected groups that do not need extra help. If they have equal access and opportunity, they should be able to achieve equality without it.” explains that the playing field is not equal, and some groups need extra assistance on equality. Everybody has the same advantages, rights and obligation. The important thing is how to use this opportunities, rights to achieve something. Everybody starts from same place in their lives. You have abilities to improve yourself, and achieve anything. Of course the results will be different because you would use you opportunities well. On the other hand, someone would not use her\his opportunities well, given them same opportunities and rights to achieve it. In addition they have abilities to achieve it.
There are some groups who face discrimination need extra assistance in their lives. These groups cannot ability to use advantages, rights, obligation were given by government. For this reason we should give them extra assistance to achieve equality. For example, disable people, women or elderly people need extra help to achieve equality. Let’s think about disable people. They started their lives like us, but they have some problems to use opportunities. For instance, how can they get on the buses to go to the school? They want to use the opportunity of education as us. I can get on the bus easily, I am not disabled. On the other hand, disable people need to extra assistance to go to school such as getting on the bus. They need to use ramp to get on the bus. This mean is not discrimination. We should protect them. They need to join in daily life. Another example is, the man who has not a leg needs wheelchair as long as he lives. He needs to work, but he needs special large area, space to sit with his wheelchair, or he needs the ramp to work. On the other hand, we cannot give extra help for health people such as large space, or separate room. This makes inequality. If we don’t give them extra assistance we prevent them to work or join in daily life.
